Title: Teaching Specialist (Biological Science) (72881)

Position Summary
Responsible for providing teaching support to the faculty, laboratory staff, and students in the Premedical and Foundation Biological Sciences courses. The incumbent is required to teach laboratory sessions, work with small groups and one-on-one student teaching, and assist with assessments. The position also supports the activities and programs of the Office of Student Outreach and Educational Development.
Job Responsibilities
- Attends course lectures, recitations, and review sessions (as requested by supervising faculty member) and maintains student attendance records, as required by the faculty.
- Updates self with the course content and learns new content as the curriculum evolves.
- Holds formal walk-in office hours for small-group or one-on-one student help, as well as meets with students upon request by appointment.
- Supports the students in other productive ways, including additional small group tutorial/help sessions before examinations or as needed, as required.
- Assists faculty in creating practice materials, including but not limited to answer keys, for students. Participates in and/or facilitates recitations and review sessions as requested by the faculty member.
- Assists in designing new teaching modules to promote effective teaching and learning to reflect modern pedagogy in biological sciences, as required.
- Assists faculty in proctoring quizzes and examinations. Assists with the grading of handed-in assignments/papers, quizzes, and exams, as required.
- Assists to maintain current course content on WCM-Q Learning Management System including uploading files, preparing online quizzes, sending broadcast messages to students, etc.
- Attends all lab sessions, and is expected to introduce and lead formal laboratory sessions in indoor or outdoor settings and/or act as support to assist in the supervision of students, as needed, in other sessions.
- Prepares/supports preparation and delivery of brief pre-lab presentations, as needed. Also responsible for communicating and assuring compliance with proper laboratory safety protocols by the students. Assesses student performance during in-lab sessions.
- Assists faculty and laboratory staff in setting up weekly experiments and conducting procedures in the lab room setting or in an outdoor environment.
- Demonstrates to students the proper and safe operation of laboratory instruments (e.g., digital pipettes, microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, PCR cyclers, etc.) and data processing.
- Assists in the development of new laboratory topics and designs experimental procedures and assessment methods, if required.
- Proctors exams in courses outside primary responsibility, supports students in preparation for the Medical College Admissions Test, assists in pre-college and/or outreach activities, orientation activities, wherever needed.
- Delivers review or remediation sessions during study breaks or summer and acts as a general support person for Premedical faculty and staff with Learning Management System.
- Lends teaching and communication expertise to the Office of Student Outreach and Educational Development by developing and/or participating in its activities and programs as assigned. Attends the relevant planning meetings as necessary.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned.

- Bachelor’s Degree
Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences with 5-6 years of teaching or tutoring experience at the college/university level.
- Master’s Degree is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Possess broad knowledge of biological principles with excellent presentation skills.
- Proficient with the use of a variety of laboratory instrumentation and techniques, including but not limited to digital pipetting, microscopy, centrifugation, spectrophotometry, PCR, basic microbiology procedures, and dissection of animals.
- Understanding statistical concepts such as experimental design, statistical testing, data processing, assessment, and analysis is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving and organizational skills and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced result-driven environment.
- Knowledgeable in scientific communication using posters and scientific writing.
- Demonstrating ability to assess and critique scientific writing.
- Proficient in MS Suite of products including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Well versed in written and spoken English.
