The Opportunity:

The office of Personal Development and Counseling Services (PDCS) at VCUarts Qatar contributes to the holistic wellbeing and success of a culturally diverse community of students within a dynamic and rigorous United States academic program in the state of Qatar. As one of the units within the Division of Student Affairs, this office focuses on student development through carefully designed interactive programing and personalized individual services. The Director of Personal Development and Counseling Services will administer and provide direct services geared at developing and supporting the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing of the student body including clinical mental health services for students, disability support services, oversight of outreach programing, and personal development initiatives. This position will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Office. This position reports to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.

VCUarts Qatar is the international branch campus of Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts (VCUarts). Major Responsibilities:

Clinical Services
·       Main provider of mental health services to students (individuals and groups)
·       Provides intake/diagnostic assessments
·       Engages in case evaluations and crisis intervention
·       Provides referral and follow up services as needed
·       Consult with faculty, staff, students and/or family as appropriate on as needed basis
·       Uses appropriate documentation protocols and software including Titanium

Development, coordination, and evaluation of wellbeing programing
·       Ensures implementation of programing that address personal growth and wellbeing, such as mental, emotional, social, and physical wellness within the context of VCUarts Qatar
·       Oversees planning, coordination, delivery and evaluation of health promotion and education programs
·       Ensuring access for entire VCUQ student population to information, programs and services that promote holistic wellbeing
·       Initiates collaborative interactions and coalitions with individuals and centers that have interest in these areas
·       Oversee creation of materials that link students to wellness information such as posters, fliers, newsletter, Intranet, etc.
·       Gathers relevant data and review current literature on the relevant topics for VCUQ population of students
·       Ensures cultural responsiveness of all programs and interactions
·       Ensures that information regarding resources available in the community for prevention, cure and treatment of health and health-related issues is disseminated to students and university community.
·       Oversees VCUarts Qatar’s immunization requirements, with administrative assistant being focal point for records and student compliance.
·       Provides outreach programing including instruction of UNIV 101/102 lectures on wellness and related topics as needed.

Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity services
·       Assists VCU Arts in Qatar in complying with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities act of 1990 as amended in 2008 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to support students with disabilities so that students have equal opportunity to benefit from all programs, services, and activities offered at VCU Arts in Qatar.
·       Collaborates with the SAEO office in Richmond to adapt, create, and update information for students and faculty
·       Provides liaison activities including education, support and advising between faculty and students
·       Provides support services to students with disabilities including but not limited to advocacy, adapted materials, alternative testing, academic advising and assistive technology.
·       Serves as information and referral source on disability related issues by providing current and accurate information regarding disability-related products, programs, and services to current students, prospective students, and faculty and staff members. Special attention is given to providing inter-culturally appropriate and relevant education and consultation.
·       Consults with school special education administrators, high school counselors, parents, VCUarts Qatar admissions staff, and program chairs, Qatar Foundation staff, and Student Health Center (QF PHCC) about the university’s services and documentation requirements for students with disabilities.
·       Fulfills requirements for confidential administrative record keeping for disability accommodation processes using appropriate software, Titanium.
·       Liaise with IT department and relevant community agencies to provide access to assistive technology and technical support to students with disability status where possible and appropriate.

Participates in Education City Case consult and Health Advisory Board committees

·       Accountable for PDCS Office strategic planning that supports institutional goals and objectives.
·       Manages PDCS office day-to-day administrative tasks and decision making in communication and collaboration with Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Dean/Executive Dean, when needed
·       Accountable for fiscal oversight and management of budget.
·       Serve on committees and working groups associated with student wellness and resources.
·       Other duties as assigned including emergency response.
·       Supervision of other professional and paraprofessional support staff as needed.

Minimum hiring qualifications:

A successful Director of Personal Development and Counseling Services has a strong set of written, verbal and digital skills as well as problem-solving capabilities. Equally important, the Director also possesses the confidence, flexibility and managerial talent to guide a team of experienced staff. Other notable skills include:
·       Leading and motivating staff to produce high-level student support while encouraging a healthy workplace that values teamwork, experience and new ideas.
·       Communicating in a clear and consistent manner.
·       Utilizing analytical, creative and organizational skills to address challenges and increase the school’s response to student needs.
·       Multitasking and prioritizing time-sensitive and confidential matters while working in a fast-paced environment.

Other required Qualifications and Experience:

·       Master’s degree or doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology; or a Master’s degree in Social Work with 7 years’ experience.
·       Experience with mental health assessment, psychotherapy, stress management approaches, mindfulness, communication skills, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention.
·       Experience designing and implementing student wellbeing programming with a clear definition of goals that align with school and institutional priorities.
·       Leadership experience building, developing, supervising and energizing a team of professionals.
·       An understanding of issues, controversies, and trends affecting student health in higher education.
·       Proven strategic and tactical communication skills and an ability to set proactive strategy throughout the year to quickly identify and address critical and high-touch situations.
·       Demonstrated commitment to working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.
·       Strong consideration will be given to professionals who have a proven track record in the provision of university-based treatment and outreach services to culturally diverse student communities with particular focus on student populations with those who identify as being part of the Arab culture.
·       Possess outstanding interpersonal skills and situational savvy with the ability to navigate complex environments with diverse constituents.
·       Excellent communication skills and English language skills.
·       Strong presentation and/or teaching skills.
·       Knowledge of PC package tools: including word-processing (Word), Spreadsheets (Excel) and Presentations (PowerPoint).
·       Knowledge of Titanium Software, or an electronic medical records software
·       Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
·       Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCUarts Qatar.
